From the Principal - Ms Tracey Kift Vol 1

Deputy Principal Junior Campus - Liviana Daniele Vol 1

A warm welcome to all of our families and staff at the Junior Campus as we begin the 2026 school year.

It has been a vibrant and energetic start to the year. On our first day, our staff and Year 8 students proudly welcomed our newest members of the Junior community, our Year 7 students. A special highlight was our combined campus assembly, where the Year 7 cohort of 2026 was formally introduced to our Junior Campus. It was a wonderful way to begin the year together and celebrate this important milestone.

The first three weeks for our Year 7s as they begin their secondary school journey are often a time of growth, adjustment, and discovery. It is normal for students to experience a mix of excitement and nervousness. Everything feels new, new classrooms, new teachers, new classmates, and new routines. Learning how to navigate a larger campus, follow a secondary school timetable, use lockers, and move between classes can feel overwhelming at first. There is also the challenge of remembering different teachers’ expectations and adapting to a greater level of independence and yet our Year 7s have coped with all these changes showing courage and resilience.

I would like to share some of the experiences from our year 7s

  • “Be open to try new things as you are welcome here at Penola. I am grateful to be here” Annika T 7E
  • “It has been great to meet friends that make me laugh and feel comfortable being at Penola. I feel like I was welcomed from the first day” Edwina M 7I
  • “The teachers have been really helpful and kind making it easy to feel welcomed. So happy I chose Penola” Mary M 7I
  • “My homeroom makes me feel like I can be myself and be able to participate in learning. I am glad I came to Penola” Daniella P 7E
  • “I have enjoyed being able to explore new things in subjects like Math's and English for example studying the origins of fairytales” Matthew B 7I

We congratulate our year 7s of 2026 on their smooth transition to Penola.

Our Year 8 students have returned to school enthusiastic, focused, and ready to embrace their second year of high school. Many have already formed connections with our incoming Year 7 students, warmly offering friendship and a sense of familiarity as they begin their journey in a new environment. Our Year 8 students have played a significant role in fostering a culture of inclusiveness and community across the Junior Campus, helping to ensure that all students feel welcomed, supported, and valued. Year 8's we congratulate you on your successful start to 2026.

In the coming weeks student leaders will be elected these positions include Class Captains and Penola Student Council members. If your child is interested in leadership, please encourage them to speak to their homeroom teacher and year level coordinators.

Our Penola Ambassador program has also been launched offering opportunities to all our junior students to be part of a leadership program in 2026.

Upcoming Events
Next Tuesday at our Opening Mass held on the Senior Campus our Year 7 students will process into our Sports and Activity Hall where they will be presented for the first time to our entire Penola Catholic College community.

Family Partnership Meetings are scheduled to take place on March 17 for our year 7 and 8 students. This is a prime opportunity for teachers, students and their families to share information that will enhance and support your child’s learning.

On March 1 - 5 Year 7 reflection days will take place they will be held at the Hope Centre in Glenroy. Another opportunity for students to build relationships with their teachers and their peers.

We look forward to seeing all our new families at our annual welcome dinner on March 26 at the Junior Campus.

Looking forward to another eventful year ahead.

Deputy Principal Senior Campus - Mr Shane Griffin Vol 1

A very warm welcome to all students for the start of the 2026 academic year! February has been a busy month with lots of learning, numerous co-curricular activities and a range of school community events. Some highlights to date include the Academic Awards Assembly, House Swimming carnival, Ash Wednesday service, Year 12 Reflection Day, the commencement of Year 10 Premier League, Italian Homestay visits and the VCE Outdoor Education Camp, not to mention numerous lunch clubs and Pastoral activities involving The Resilience Project! As always, students are continued to make the most of the wonderful opportunities at the College and strive for their personal best.

Yard supervision
A reminder to families that the Senior Campus has teacher supervision in the school yard from 8.15am. Students can access their locker areas from 8.30am, ready to be seated in Homeroom commencing at 8.40am. Students arriving at school between 7.30am and 8.15am are required to attend the ERC. The ERC is supervised until 4.30pm each afternoon should students wish to complete homework or attend after school academic clubs. Students remaining on site at the end of the school day are to please make their way to the ERC.

The Resilience Project
As stated above, the College is proud to be continuing our work with The Resilience Project, an evidence based whole school wellbeing program. Our staff recently completed professional learning to continue to build skills to facilitate activities that promote gratitude, empathy, mindfulness and emotional literacy. GEM chats are a great way for us all to practices the key principles The Resilience Project. Here are some suggestions on how families may like to practice gratitude.

If you would like to learn more about The Resilience Project, please save the date Thursday 7 May (time TBC)! Sam Korsch will be facilitating the session and more details will be communicated in the April newsletter.

During the next eleven months, you will notice that a Child Safe Standard will appear in each newsletter to assist in understanding what the 11 Child Safe Standards consist of and additional information can be obtained via https://ccyp.vic.gov.au/child-safe-standards/

St Francis Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

St Francis of Assisi

I’m delighted to write the first instalment of the Faith and Mission newsletter for 2026. Whilst the Jubilee Year of 2025 is ended, Pope Leo called for a special Jubilee of St Francis for 2026, which marks the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis of Assisi. This special Jubilee commenced January 10 2026 until January 10 2027, this special year of grace commemorates the saint's life and message of peace. It includes a plenary indulgence for pilgrims visiting Franciscan sites. Pope Leo decreed, “Peace with God, peace among human beings, and with Creation are inseparable dimensions of a single call to universal reconciliation.” Given the state of unrest within our world today, St Francis’ Peace Prayer is well needed.

St Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison-Woods intentionally set out to reach the marginalised and taught the masses, regardless of wealth, social stature or religion. They offered Catholic education to all children, with the hope of breaking down societal barriers and giving these young people a chance to grow their futures. With this in mind, Penola continues to strive to educate within the Josephite charism, as Mary and Julian wanted us to do, and always keeping Jesus at the centre of our attention.

The year has started in haste, and as a Faith and Mission department we have been busy.

Firstly, we are delighted and very grateful for all of the students who submitted artwork to capture the 2026 College theme, “Believe in the whisperings of God to your own heart”. Isla Gr (Y11) was the winning student with her image of the resurrected Christ extending his hand to us, inviting us to participate in his Mission. Second place was won by Year 8 student Koa I. Thank you to these students and all who ventured into the realm of art work for the College theme. The College theme banner is now displayed across both campuses to remind us to listen out for the voice of God in the gentleness of nature and in the encounters we have with those around us.

Shrove Tuesday saw the selling of pancakes at both Junior and Senior campuses as we seek to raise money and awareness of the Project Compassion drive. Staff and students indulged in pancakes and condiments as we ventured towards a very early Ash Wednesday. A small group of student leaders attended the Project Compassion launch at MacKillop College, Werribee. The group of Year 8, 11 and 12 students were present as the archbishop launched an important program within Melbourne. As we do regularly at the College, each Homeroom has a Project Compassion box and we encourage students and families to contribute to these via their loose change. The Homegroups with the most funds raised at both campuses will receive a pizza lunch during Term 2 at a time that suits the class.

Ash Wednesday was a little different this year. The student leaders assisted the Faith and Mission Team in leading an Ash Wednesday liturgy celebrated in the round at the Senior Campus. We had a similar liturgy at the Junior Campus, but not in the round. The ashes were distributed at the liturgy, which was separate from the Opening College Mass, scheduled for Tuesday 3 March. Fr Samuel Pearson and Fr Mahir Murad will celebrate the Mass. It will be at the upcoming Mass that we will formally sing the new College song, “ We Walk in Her Way” within the celebration of the Eucharist. Many thanks to Ms Tracey Kift who wrote and composed music to the song.

Finally, we successfully ran the first reflection day of the year with the Year 12 cohort and their teachers at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre in South Morang. The day was held on Friday 20 February and led by Fr Rob Galea and Alyssa Agius who spoke of the role of Christ in their lives. Fr Rob opened up on many fronts and showed his vulnerabilities in the face of Christ, and called the Year 12 students to have the courage to respond to Christ in their times of need. In essence, we can use the College artwork and take a hold of Christ’s extended hand, as he reaches out to us every day. Fr Rob gave two strong and emotional talks, we had some wonderful music and even a student dance! The teaching Mass at the end of the day was monumental and something that will remain embedded in my mind for a long time.

Formed is an online app that the Faith and Mission department has invested in for all members of the College. This is a like a catholic Netflix and offers a plethora of Catholic content. Details about how to log in are on myPenola. If anyone has difficulty logging on, please email the Faith and Mission department at school. This is a great resource for families too and an opportunity to engage in or learn about solid Catholic teaching.

Some opportunities within the Faith and Mission department include and upcoming excursion on Thursday 19 March to attend Holy Hour at the Cathedral. This is an event that is attended by many young people within the Melbourne Archdiocese. Students from Years 9-12 are encouraged to attend. We will start with a pizza dinner before heading to the cathedral.

The students that attended ACYF in 2025 also have opportunities to extend their faith by experiencing the Faith Corner youth group on Mondays at lunchtimes, led by Christian servises captains Maria Lasala and Wirrhena Rainey. Students are encouraged to attend, these are held in Mannes House and are a great way to continue the light of Christ experienced in Melbourne’s ACYF. We also have Rosary, Divine Chaplet and Lectio Divina in the chapel Wednesday-Friday. Fr Sam Pearson continues to visit on Friday lunchtimes. World Youth Day is being prepared for 2027 in Korea, so this is something students may wish to think about throughout their prayer journey this year.

Many thanks to you all and may you have a blessed 2026

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us

St Joseph, pray for us

And may we always remember, to pray for one another. Amen
