From the Principal - Ms Tracey Kift Vol 5

Deputy Principal Junior Campus - Liviana Daniele Vol 5

Term 3 has commenced with exceptional energy, characterized by an extensive range of rigorous academic pursuits, community milestones, and student leadership opportunities across all year levels.

Our Year 8 students recently visited La Trobe University, immersing themselves in higher education through targeted interactive workshops. During this excursion, they navigated the campus through an educational scavenger hunt, conducted hands-on science experiments involving shampoo production or orange oil extraction, and engaged in a critical thinking exercise titled "Mission to Mars" to debate and justify personnel selection based on professional skills. This experience successfully fostered long-term academic aspirations, coinciding with the commencement of their subject selections for the 2027 academic year.

Simultaneously, the college community came together to celebrate our Josephite Charism during JJAMM week. This celebration featured a highly competitive student versus staff volleyball match, culminating in a well-earned student victory, alongside fundraising efforts through the sale of hot jam donuts for charity. The week also highlighted our performing arts department, with students delivering excellent band and solo musical numbers, as well as two preview showcases from the upcoming junior production of Alice in Wonderland.

In connection with our heritage, Year 7 students attended a biographical theatrical performance detailing the life of blessed Saint Mary MacKillop. The play masterfully illustrated her journey as an Australian educational pioneer who established the nation's first Catholic school in Penola, South Australia, while highlighting her enduring commitment to social justice and the marginalized.

We congratulate Chrestin S 7H for her involvement in an initiative by vicseg on cyber safety for young people. Chrestin was part of a working party that designed an animation video aiming to improve community knowledge about cyber safety, risks involved in today’s digital environment, and what families can do to satay safe online.

Finally, we commend the students who demonstrated academic rigour by participating in the annual mathematics competition this week. We also extend our gratitude to our junior ambassadors for their visible leadership growth, notably evidenced by organizing board games in the ERC, conducting professional junior campus tours, and leading our Mary MacKillop feast day Para liturgy.

Deputy Principal Faith and Mission - Vince Iannuzzi Vol 5

Welcome to the fifth instalment of the Faith and Mission Newsletter for 2026. Staff and students have been extremely busy engaging in the faith life of the College.

As we enter the mid way of Term 3, I reflect on the beauty of the charism of the Josephite school that we belong to. Last week we gathered to celebrate the Solemnity of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop in a very humble way at the College. The beginning of August was marked by quite some movement and energy within the school as we prepared for celebrations of a lesser-key Feast Day through the celebration of JJAMM Week. Both Junior and Senior Campuses dived into celebrations and learning about the charity organisations linked with each Year level. JJAMM, an acronym standing for St Joseph, Fr Julian Tenison Woods and St Mary MacKillop where staff and students gathered for a week of celebration, reflection, and fundraising. We held events such as bands, ice bucket challenges, staff v students volleyball matches, and of course, selling jam donuts. We even had a Faith Corner session dedicated to learning about the significance of JJAMM and the Josephites here in Victoria and in Tasmania. As we led to Mary’s feast day on 8 August, we gathered as Senior and Junior Campuses to pray a para-liturgy together. Fr Benneth Osuagwu from St Mark’s Fawkner came and celebrated Mass on Friday 7 August at 7.20am. Whilst there was a small group of faithful, we were blessed with Fr Benneth and Ms Kift’s beautiful singing during the Mass. St Mary MacKillop would have been delighted!

Given the civil works at school, we have shifted the main Feast Day to Friday 4 September and look forward to seeing Fr Samuel Pearson and Fr Mahir Murad celebrate Mass before we participate in lots of fun activities with rides, music and different foods. More information will come in the following weeks.

Finally, as we continue through Term 3, let us remember that Mary and Julian's wishes were to provide accessible and rigorous Catholic education to all — and that vision remains as alive today as it was in 1866. The purpose of the Institute they founded was to serve the "Catholic education of poor children" and to perform "urgent works of charity" in areas that other religious congregations had not yet reached. They lived in truly evangelical poverty, providing elementary education, often in remote areas and never demanding any payment, to children who would not otherwise have been educated.

St Mary understood that for her, the best way to spread the Good News was through the education of the young, knowing that Catholic education is a form of evangelization. She was convinced that the purpose of education is the integral development of the person both as an individual and as a member of the community, and that this requires wisdom, patience and charity on the part of every teacher.

That vision echoes powerfully throughout this College every single day. Every band performance, every volleyball match, every donut sold, every hour of prayer — all of it reflects the same truth Mary and Julian lived: that faith and charity are not extras added to education, but its very heart.

True education means accompanying and encouraging students on the path of human and spiritual growth, showing them how friendship with the Risen Jesus expands the heart and makes life more humane — helping them to think well, to listen carefully (the language of the heart), and to do good (the language of the hands).

May St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and Fr Julian Tenison Woods continue to intercede for our school community — that every student and staff member would know they are loved, known, and called to something greater. We look forward to celebrating together on 4 September!

God bless,

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us

St Joseph, pray for us

And may we always remember, to pray for one another. Amen

Compass

Over the next six months, we will begin a gradual transition from MyPenola to Compass, our new school management system. This phased approach will allow us to introduce new features and processes progressively, ensuring a smooth transition for students, parents and staff.

As part of our transition to Compass, parents and carers will begin receiving Chronicle Entry notifications via the Compass app and email.

Chronicle Entries allow the school to communicate important information relating to your child's learning, wellbeing, behaviour and other pastoral matters in a timely and consistent way.

Depending on the type of Chronicle Entry, you may receive:

  • A notification advising that a Chronicle Entry has been recorded.
  • A request to review and acknowledge or approve an entry.

See example below

If you receive a notification requesting your approval, we ask that you please action it as soon as possible. Your acknowledgement is important, as it confirms that you have received and understood the information being shared. In some cases, this acknowledgement also forms part of our consent and communication processes.

We encourage all parents and carers to ensure that:

  • The Compass app is installed and notifications are enabled.
  • Your email address in Compass is current.
  • Notifications are checked regularly.

Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to enhance communication between home and school through Compass. If you have any questions or require assistance using Compass, please don't hesitate to contact the school.

Year 10 Ball

The Year 10 Ball is a wonderful opportunity for our students to celebrate this important stage of their secondary schooling, enjoy an evening with their friends and create lasting memories together.

Over the years, the Year 10 Ball has become a much-loved Penola tradition, with students enjoying the opportunity to dress up, socialise and celebrate with their year level.

With the deadline fast approaching, we encourage families to ensure their child does not miss out. If your child would like to attend this year’s Year 10 Ball, please return their Ticket Acknowledgment Slip to the Year 10 Coordinators by this Friday 14 August.

We look forward to celebrating with our Year 10 students and creating another memorable Penola occasion.

Father's Day Breakfast

Syndey Art Tour

On Thursday 25 June to Sunday 28 June, 22 Art, Media and VCD students, accompanied by teachers, Ms Pascalis, Mr Diaz, Mr Irwin and Mr Jacuta, embarked on an inspiring tour of Sydney's vibrant art scene. Over the four action-packed days, students explored renowned galleries, attended the Banksy exhibition, visited local markets, spent time in Manly, experienced the iconic Sydney Opera House, and enjoyed a visit to Taronga Zoo. The excursion was both enjoyable and enriching, providing students with unforgettable experiences while deepening their understanding of Visual Arts through first hand exposure to a diverse range of artistic and cultural experiences.

Learning and Teaching

Learning, Pathways and Partnership: Looking Ahead
Term 3 is a busy and important time for students and families. Students are continuing their learning, making decisions about future pathways and preparing for key events across the remainder of the year.

Careers Expo and subject selection
Our recent Careers Expo gave students and families the opportunity to learn more about university, TAFE, training and career pathways. This work has continued through the subject selection process for 2027. Students have been supported to choose subjects that reflect their interests, strengths and future goals, while also considering prerequisites and certificate requirements.

Families are reminded that subject selections are not final until they have been approved through SchoolData. While the College will do its best to accommodate student preferences, subjects remain dependent on student demand, staffing and timetable requirements.

Family Partnership Meetings
Family Partnership Meetings will be held online through Microsoft Teams on Thursday 20 August.

Meetings will run from:

  • 1.30 pm to 4.00 pm
  • 4.30 pm to 7.00 pm

These meetings are a valuable opportunity for students, families and teachers to discuss progress, celebrate what is going well and identify areas for further growth. Students are encouraged to take an active part in the conversation. Booking information was posted on Compass last week, and Microsoft Teams links will be sent closer to the date.

Checking MyPenola
Families are encouraged to check MyPenola regularly for assessment results, teacher feedback and information about student progress.

Feedback helps students understand both what they are doing well and what they can focus on next. Families might find it helpful to ask:

  • What did you do well?
  • What do you need to improve?
  • What will you do differently next time?
  • Is there anything you need to clarify with your teacher?

Checking MyPenola regularly also helps ensure that questions or concerns can be followed up early.

An important term for Year 12 students
Term 3 is the final term of substantial new learning for Year 12 students before the focus shifts more fully towards revision and examination preparation.

Consistent attendance, active participation and sustained effort over the coming weeks will make an important difference. Students should also continue working with the Careers Team to finalise VTAC, tertiary and SEAS applications, along with pathway planning and supporting documentation.

Year 12 trial examinations
Year 12 trial examinations will run from Monday 28 September to Thursday 1 October. These examinations give students the opportunity to practise under timed conditions, identify gaps in their knowledge and receive feedback to guide their final revision. Students are encouraged to treat each trial examination as a genuine rehearsal and to carefully review their responses afterwards.

Students can access VCAA examination specifications, past examinations and assessment reports to become familiar with the structure and expectations of their examinations.

All students completing VCE external assessments should also read the 2026 VCE Exams Navigator, which includes important information about examination rules, approved materials and practical arrangements.

Supporting effective study
It is never too early, or too late, to establish a useful study routine. Families do not need to know all the answers or become experts in every subject. Practical, calm and consistent support can make a real difference.

Families can support students by:

  • setting regular and realistic study times;
  • providing a quiet space with limited distractions;
  • encouraging practice questions and recalling information from memory rather than simply rereading notes;
  • helping students set clear and achievable goals;
  • supporting sleep, exercise and regular meals; and
  • encouraging students to ask their teachers for help early.

The headspace guide to studying for exams and reducing stress provides practical advice about planning, prioritising, staying focused and looking after wellbeing. The Raising Children Network guide to stress in teenagers also provides useful advice for families, including listening to young people, recognising signs of stress and developing a manageable study timetable together.

Uniform Changes for 2027

From 2027, Penola Catholic College will be making a small change to our College uniform.

What’s changing?
Currently, students in Years 7–9 wear a maroon blazer, while students in Years 10–12 wear a navy blazer.

From 2027, all new students will wear a navy blazer. Maroon blazers will no longer be available for purchase.

What does this mean for current students?

  • Current students may continue to wear their maroon blazer until they outgrow it or reach Year 10, whichever comes first.
  • If a current student needs to purchase a new blazer before reaching Year 10, they will need to purchase a navy blazer.
  • From Year 10, students will continue to wear the navy blazer as usual.

We understand that changes to uniform can require some adjustment and appreciate your support and understanding as we transition to the updated uniform.
