Congratulations to Mr. Ashley Mills
Congratulations to Mr. Ashley Mills who has been appointed as Head of Wellbeing at Iona College in Geelong for 2022. We will farewell Ash at the end of the year, but I would like to publicly thank Ash for his efforts at Penola Catholic College over the past 16.5 years. He has taken on many roles throughout this time as Year Level Coordinator, Coordinator of Students (Years 11 & 12), Literacy Coach, outstanding Health and Physical Education teacher, Football Coach and Penola medalist recognising his contributions.

Year 7 Enrolments 2023
A reminder to all of our existing families, that Year 7 enrolments for 2023 close on Friday, 20 August. A number of families applied after the close of enrolment last year and it makes it very difficult to accurately plan for the following year, so I ask that you submit your enrolment as soon as possible. Often families assume that we know that there is a younger sibling and would be very disappointed if one of our existing families missed out on an enrolment due to not submitting their enrolment in a timely manner.

Mary MacKillop Day
St Mary MacKillop is Australia’s first saint and patron saint of Penola Catholic College. This year we celebrate St Mary MacKillop Day on Friday, August 6, 2021 which is close to the anniversary of Mary’s death on August 8, 1909. Much has been planned for the day and the day has a different focus given that we are unable to meet together as a whole community with current restrictions on large gatherings. It provides us with a chance to celebrate our collective Josephite charism and spirit here at Penola. This is done through a Mass which will be live streamed to each homeroom at the beginning of the day followed by a presentation from Sr Rita Malavisi on Mary MacKillop.

We are planning on having our celebration/activities day with rides and food trucks etc. on Friday, October 15 (close to the anniversary of Mary MacKillop’s canonisation – October 17) provided restrictions have eased and we are able to meet in large numbers.

I am looking forward to St Mary MacKillop Day and hope that it is both successful and rewarding for all. When you sign up for a place at Penola there are a range of different things that you are required to do as a result. Involvement in whole school activities such as our masses and St Mary MacKillop Day is non-negotiable.

College Production – Fame Jr
The performances for the College production will take place on:

• Monday, August 9 at 4.30pm. & 7.30pm.
• Tuesday, August 10 at 4.30pm. & 7.30pm.
• Wednesday, August 11 at 4.30pm. & 7.30pm.

Fortunately, we will have live audiences present and adhere to any density limits / COVID restrictions. Maximum 65 on Monday and Maximum of 100 on Tuesday & Wednesday.

Careers Expo
The Senior Programs Evening did not go ahead due to lockdown and Mr. Terry McGann liaised with Tertiary representatives to present virtually during the week Monday, August 2 until Thursday, August 5. We have timeslots allocated on each day for presentations between 4.00pm and 7.30pm. Universities, TAFEs, and Private Tertiary Colleges will present for 25-30mins with some time at the end for your personal questions. Students and parents will have the opportunity of being involved in several or many presentations, depending on your interests. Response from the Institutions has been excellent, and I would like to thank Mr. Terry McGann for his outstanding organization of the expo in trying circumstances.

2021 General Achievement Test – Postponed until Thursday August 12
The 2021 General Achievement Test (GAT) which was scheduled for Thursday, July 29, 2021 has been rescheduled to Thursday, August 12. The rescheduling of the GAT allows schools time to organise logistics and put in place COVID Safe protocols so the GAT can be delivered in line with relevant Health and Safety requirements.

Consideration of Educational Disadvantage for VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3-4
In recognition of the continued disruptions caused by COVID-19, the Consideration of Educational Disadvantage (CED) process will continue this year.

Consistent with last year, this process requires schools to provide VCAA with information on all students to help finalise VCE scores. The CED process will again consider all available information including examination results, the GAT, and appropriate comparisons of performance across all assessments and schools, which will contribute to fair and valid VCE study scores.

VCAL Special Consideration
Special consideration will also be available for final year VCAL students. More information and guidance for schools on how to apply special consideration for VCAL students will be provided by the VCAA shortly.

COVID Fatigue and Youth Mental Health
As the nation remains to be on alert and in various stages of lockdown, restrictions continue to be mandated. And we, as a society, persevere to do the best we can to navigate this post-COVID era. Whilst some of us quietly take comfort from the availability of vaccines, it does introduce new uncertainties for families and young people alike. We continue to remain in a state of suspended animation, wondering when “normal” will return.

The physical impact of the pandemic has mostly spared our young people; however researchers are now reporting that children and adolescents are paying a heavy emotional and developmental price, being affected by a range of psychological disorders. According to Kids Helpline, emergency interventions to protect young people have skyrocketed over the last 12 months.

Parent Engagement in Learning
There is a significant amount of research that indicates the greater the level of parent engagement in learning, the better the student results. Research from John Hattie suggests that when the effect size of effective teachers is complemented with the effect size of engaged parents, the resulting effect size is above 0.8- or two-years’ achievement in one. This suggests that when parents and teachers work together the achievement of all students is greater. Parent participation can be seen as a continuum from involvement to engagement to empowerment.

Our statistics taken from our College website indicate that less than 30% of families open the newsletter every fortnight. The following strategies are suggested to increase parent engagement.

• Authoritative Parenting – a balance between love and warmth and setting boundaries.
• Know the value of education – parents model the behaviors of successful lifelong learners to their children
• Have high expectations and aspirations – parents hold high expectations for their children, communicate a belief in their potential to achieve and discuss their child’s educational and career aspirations.
• Family-led learning in the home – linking schoolwork with current events, discussing learning strategies with your child and making connections between their current effort and achievement of future goals of employment or further study.
• Becoming engaged and staying engaged throughout their schooling – regular talk about school and the value of learning throughout schooling, particularly at transition points.
• Family-school communication – schooling is relationship based and requires quality two-way communication and meaningful dialogue between home and school.

It was comforting coming back to face to face teaching after just over a week of another round of remote learning. Both staff and students were very enthusiastic to be back on campus and enjoying their daily school routines. We are reminded about the importance of being together and being able to interact with each other and how this positively impacts our wellbeing and adds to the life of our vibrant school community.

Even though we returned with COVID safe restrictions in place we were also very fortunate enough to be able to continue with planned activities in the coming weeks including the career course counselling that will take place for Years 9 and 10 students next week. Each student will have the opportunity to speak to a course counsellor to ensure they have decided on an appropriate program for 2022.

Production Update – Fame Junior.
In the coming week Mrs Ramona Arney and Mrs Jane Dali continue to rehearse with the students so that they are ready for their show times that will take place on August 9, 10 and 11. With the current COVID guidelines the students will have the opportunity to perform for a live audience even though numbers will be limited. The cast a crew have had a live ‘rehearsal’ and this will be followed by after school rehearsals on Wednesday August 4 and Thursday August 5. We wish the staff and students of Junior Fame all the best in the coming weeks as we look forward to be able to watch our school production for 2021.

Penola Outdoor Environmental Studies Ski Trip.
The Penola annual Outdoor Environmental Studies Ski Trip is also going ahead this week with the provision COVID safe measures being put in place. The Year 11 Outdoor & Environmental Studies class will be visiting Mt Hotham Ski camp from Wednesday 4 August to Friday 6 August. A group of 18 students accompanied by Luke Reynolds, Steven Woodburn, Natalie Pressuti and Jason Hussey will visit Mt Hotham and take part in the Alpine Expedition which includes skiing and snowboarding activities. We wish them all the best on their three day camp experience.

Year 12 Art Gallery Visit
As part of the Unit 4 Studio Art Industry Context unit, Year 12 students took part in an excursion to Lyon House Gallery Museum in Kew on Friday 30 July. The students viewed an exhibition on John Nixon a contemporary Australian artist. The exhibition involved art works from 1995 to 2014 and students were able to gain knowledge about the operations and purposes of art galleries.

It was fantastic to have students back on the campus over the last week after our recent lockdown. With students moving in and out of lockdowns over the last 18 months the Glenroy Wellbeing Team have been conscious of the effect’s lockdowns have on students academically, socially and emotional wellbeing. We have therefor been working with our students and developing programs that will assist them in these areas.

Wellbeing Framework
The College has been working over the course of the last year to develop a Penola Catholic College Wellbeing Framework. The wellbeing framework team have been active in developing a wellbeing framework that is relevant to our school context and set of principles. While the below diagram is still in its infancy stage, I thought I would share the first glimpse of how the framework is developing with our Penola Catholic College community. Below are the key values and attributes we endeavor to build with our students over their 6 year journey. The aim is to look at embedding these within our wellbeing, pastoral and academic programs in 2022.

College Planner
As part of our strategic plan the Glenroy Campus staff have been modelling how the planner can be a tool to benefit study. With all our Year 7 students having a planner and all our Year 8s in 2022, can I please encourage all Year 7 parents to assist the staff by checking their child is writing their homework, as well as tests and assignments. I will be completing a Study vs Homework session with both year levels in the coming weeks.

JJAMM Week 2021
“Work on with Constancy and Courage” is our College theme this year and it certainly reflects our attitude and our determination throughout JJAMM week this year. It would have been easy to say, “Let’s cancel JJAMM Week, it’s all too hard and would take way too much effort to put it together with all the various restrictions in place.” Yet, we know that was never St Mary of the Cross’ way; her dogged attitude ensured she would “work on with constancy and courage” to do all she could to support anyone in need, no matter the circumstances. She wouldn’t have made any excuses and so neither did we!

St Mary calls each of us, as members of the Penola Catholic College community and followers of her charism, to follow her lead and to be people of hospitality and welcome, and most importantly, to be people of action. Therefore, as a community, we actively support those who are less fortunate than ourselves, by raising funds through our College Year Level Charities, and in doing so, try to make a positive difference in our world.

Despite the challenges of the Covid restrictions placed upon us in JJAMM Week 2021, each Year Level truly managed to “work on with constancy and courage”, organising a variety of fundraising activities. I offer a huge thank you to the students and staff who organised these fundraising events throughout the week. Your efforts will certainly go a long way in making a difference to the lives of those who need our support – Thank you!

JJAMM week has been a beautiful celebration of Mary's wonderful life, example and charism. I am hopeful that JJAMM week did call to mind that Mary’s lives in each of us at Penola Catholic College, through our action and desire to support others.

Media Studies
Last term the Year 11 Media Studies students undertook an excursion to ACMI (the Australian Centre for the Moving Image). This visual arts museum is located just off Federation Square and had newly reopened after a period of refurbishment. As such, the Penola students got to experience a range of brand new/cutting edge displays and interactives that demonstrate the myriad ways that media shapes our world.

From watching clips of early cinema to creating their own movie sound effects checking out a range of real-life movie props and costumes as well as playing video games from across the ages – the Year 11s made full use of the fantastic resources. Finally, special take-home tokens equipped with RFID chips allowed students to digitally “collect” exhibits that were of particular interest.

Pathways and Subject Selection
Students are currently actively engaged in planning their learning journey for 2022. With the support of staff our students are considering the options available in terms of pathways and subjects.

The students have been fortunate to participate in a wide range of activities to support their decision making based on their interest and learning goals.

These activities have included:

• Pastoral lessons focused on the curriculum structure at each year level
• Viewing vodcasts focused on key learning areas, VCE, VCAL and VET
• Attending the Senior Programs Day to speak with Heads of Learning and subject teachers
• Attending lunchtime VCAL sessions to learn more about applied learning

From next week the senior students will be meeting with course advisors and entering their subject preferences for 2022.

Parents you can support your son and daughter by discussing their selections at home and assisting them to complete the Planning Sheet prior to course advice.

Broadmeadows
The HPE department is looking forward to providing students with a range of interactive and fun learning experiences during Term 3 since we have now returned from lockdown and COVID safe practices allowed.

The Year 10s have commenced their Semester 2 program by engaging themselves in sports such as Rock-climbing, Skateboarding, Lacrosse and Ultimate Frisbee. Unfortunately, with COVID-19 hitting us once again, we were only able to have two weeks of classes before we quickly adapted to online learning. Now we are back and a whole semester ahead of us, our aim is to ensure all students get the opportunity have meaningful learning experiences in each of these activities and are grateful to our providers, Gravity Worx Indoor Rock Climbing and OwnLife in conjunction with YMCA for providing the rock climbing and skateboarding experiences.

Later this term, the Year 10s will commence ballroom dancing with our favourite instructor Jeremy Garner. Jeremy is a professional Ballroom dancer who has appeared in shows such as ‘Dancing with the Stars Australia’, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and performed in London’s West End in his show “Burn the Floor”. Dancing classes will commence week 8 of Term 3 on a six-week block, this will conclude in week 3 of Term 4 with the Year 10 Ball.

The VCE and VET Outdoor Ed programs have a number of great events being provided this term. Students have been provided with information regarding the camps and one day events. These are important learning experiences that bring the curriculum to life and allow the students to apply their theoretical knowledge to real world experiences.

Glenroy
In Term 3, the Year 7 and 8 students have enjoyed getting out of their comfort zones through completing a gymnastics and dance unit. This is an opportunity for our students to show some creative flare within PE.

Year 7 will complete simple dances as a class and within small groups during the first part of Term 3, finishing with their own choreography of a dance routine that they will perform for the class. Gymnastics will be structured around static and partner balances, locomotion movements and some use of the College gymnastics equipment such as spring boards, wedges, beams and acromats. We look forward to seeing our students creative side flourish throughout this unit.

The Year 8 Dance unit will focus on Hip Hop. We hope with the assistance of Deon, an established Hip Hop instructor who (restrictions permitting) will come to the College to lead our lessons with our students. The gymnastics unit will predominantly be run from inside the College for Year 8, focusing on various gymnastics disciplines and ultimately finishing with a session at the Essendon Keilor Gymnastics Academy where students can refine their skills learnt at school with the assistance of instructors and resources available at the Academy.

Finally, we would like to extend a huge congratulations to Penola Alumni, Ezi Magbegor, who is representing Australia in the Opal’s basketball team. It is an exciting time for her and the first Penola student to represent at the Olympics. Unfortunately the Opals were defeated by the USA in the Women's Qauterfinals, 79 - 55.
Still, an amazing effort from Ezi Magbegor and we couldn't be more proud.

How to submit a CSEF Application in 2021

If you have applied for the CSEF in a previous year, you do not need to complete an application form in 2021. Unless there has been a change in your family circumstances, the school will apply for the CSEF on your behalf.

You will ONLY need to submit an application form in 2021 if any of the following changes have occurred:

• New student enrolments: Your child has changed schools in 2021 or you did not apply at the same school.
• Changed family circumstances, such as: a change of custody, change of name, concession card number or new siblings commencing at the school in 2021.
• Applications for newly arrived refugee and Asylum Students remain open till end of Term 4.

Certificate III in Make‐Up

This qualification qualifies individuals to be employed as make‐up artists to design and apply make‐up for a range of purposes and occasions across the beauty, fashion, media, and entertainment industries.

Upon successful completion of the Cert III in Make‐up, individuals will possess a range of well‐developed make‐up and consultation skills where discretion and judgement are required and where there is a requirement to perform autonomously to achieve outputs. This includes working cooperatively with a range of individuals including photographers, hairdressers, fashion stylists and media production staff and other related industry roles.

Work is typically conducted as part of a team or on a freelance basis in settings such as make‐up studios, retail cosmetic counters, fashion and media sets and photography studios.

What’s covered in the Certificate III in Make‐up?

• Information and hands‐on activities to enable students to complete the following aspects of work in the make‐up industry is provided as part of the course
• Skills and knowledge required to maintain a safe work environment for staff and customers by observing basic safety and emergency procedures in a salon environment
• Knowledge of workplace rights, responsibilities, and organisational policies and procedures by using effective team and individual work practices to plan and organise daily salon related activities
• Information and techniques to undertake a range of the latest make‐up application trends and techniques including, special occasion, bridal and fashion make‐up, airbrushing, camouflage, temporary eyelash extensions and fantasy make‐up
• Hands on practical tasks for shaping and tinting of eyebrows, lash lifts and tints
• Conducting skin analysis to identify skin type, colouring, age, facial structure, and shape
• Preparing skin for make‐up application and applying make‐up products to meet clients’ expectations as per the consult
• Providing and recommending various skincare, cosmetic, make‐up products and services
• Conducting financial transactions sales of products and services within a personal services environment using a salon software program
• Keeping work areas and equipment clean and tidy as well as performing housekeeping duties in a salon
• Provision of excellent customer service by adhering to customer service values and standards
